Type: Class Project
Time Taken: 6 days | Software Used: Adobe Illustrator, Clip Studio Paint Pro, Microsoft Excel
As a class, we came up with a list of questions we wanted everyone to answer, which we then used as the database for our projects. As there were only 16 people in the class, there was not a lot of information to visualise. Inspired by Giorgia Lupi and Mona Chalabi, I also wanted to explore the 'data art' side of information visualisation for my first dive into this topic. Because of the above reasons, I decided to do something more exploratory.
As the dataset was so relevant to my college and the students in it, I wanted to include their visuals as much as I could. I love to play around with metaphors and symbolism, which I tried to incorporate here as well. The resulting visualisations are playful but direct and easy to understand, incorporating my illustration and personal visual style.
There were many interesting parts in the dataset: for example, how the number of people who did not mind wearing the ID card (a relatively new enforced rule in our college) was equal to those who did, which matches the two halves of the lanyard holding an ID card around our neck.
What also made me really excited while making the 7 postcards was the one which visualised the waking time of each student in our class. Using the average time our classes start, I was able to show the data we'd collected. It thus shows more information than what seems to be displayed: not only the number of people waking up in a particular time range, but also the time classes begin, and also raises questions and curiosity of how each student travels to college, and how exactly this affects their waking time.
I love being able to form connections like this, and trying to condense as much information as possible in a design, while also ensuring that the end result is fun and easy to understand. This was something I tried my best to do in this assignment as well.
